Lee Hoon Piek
"One of my greatest joys in life is watching kids grow and finding their own melody through music."
Lee Hoon Piek (李粉德) is a distinguished musician and educator with an unwavering passion for music. Having founded the Kids' Philharmonic@SG (KPO) in 2010, Mr Lee has profoundly impacted the development of music talents in Singapore by offering young children immersive orchestral experiences that would otherwise be unavailable to them. Since the inception of KPO, hundreds of students, instructors and conductors have benefitted from being part of KPO, with many going on to pursue a career in music.
A seasoned musician himself with an extensive background in the Chinese Orchestra, Mr Lee began his musical journey playing the Sheng. His early performances at community events ignited a lifelong love for music, leading him to subsequently master various instruments including the violin, cello, and viola. Despite being 70 years old, Mr Lee remains steadfast in his commitment to music as he continuously strives to broaden opportunities for young musicians across Singapore. Furthermore, his extensive network has enabled KPO to perform at prestigious international venues and collaborate with prominent partners, including the Hradec Kralove Philharmonic Orchestra and the Suzhou Municipal government.
Mr Lee’s formal musical education was completed at the London Royal Academy of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music. His professional journey includes a wealth of experience as a certified MOE AMIS Conductor/Instructor for String Ensembles, teaching at numerous primary schools such as Tanjong Katong, Nan Hua, Princess Elizabeth, and Rulang Primary Schools.
In addition to his work with schools, Mr Lee served as a P.A. Qualified Trainer (Violin) at several community clubs, including Elias, Pasir Ris East, Taman Jurong, Nanyang, Bukit Batok, Nee Soon East, Simei, and Tiong Bahru Community Clubs.
Through his visionary leadership, Mr Lee Hoon Piek continues to shape the future of orchestral music in Singapore, as he tirelessly reinvents KPO to meet modern demands while spearheading innovative projects such as Singapore's first-ever Elite Soloist Ensemble. His efforts ensure that KPO remains a leading source of inspiration for young musicians worldwide.
